How FOHFs today are behaving differently than in 2008

Today we are seeing the lessons from 2008-2009 evidenced in FOHF operations.. In addition to the much-publicized enhanced due-diligence of the underlying investments, we see these additional trends emerging:

  • Fiduciary responsibility – funds are doing more detailed reconciliation of reports that they get from their administrators, doing due-diligence not only on their investments, but on their operations service providers.
  • Investor Servicing – funds are ensuring that they can answer all investor inquiries with as much detail as exists, in real time, with documentation to back up their answers. When their investors call with questions about balances, returns, fees, concentration, liquidity, and exposure, the funds must show that they have accessible and detailed records in place.

To address these industry trends, Cogency redirected its product development efforts and produced these product features:

  • External-Reconciliation – Cogency now supports automatic reconciliation and true-up of the capital and portfolio within the system against external data feeds from an administrator or other source. This enables our clients to keep internal records at whatever level of detail they are comfortable with, quickly find and research discrepancies between their records and administrator reports, and then true-up their internal records with their external records once conflicts were resolved.
  • Capital Dashboard – These dashboards are a single integrated view of an investor or investor family’s history with the firm, including investments and returns in all funds, transaction history, payment schedules, liquidity details, and all other pertinent data. This dashboard, along with Cogency’s reporting technology that allows users to create ad-hoc aggregation and detail reports, makes it easy for our clients to respond to investor inquiries.
